Solutions For Tooth Loss

In fact, nearly three-quarters of all American adults have lost at least one tooth. Sometimes, tooth loss happens because you crack a tooth that has to be covered with a crown. Other people lose teeth because they are injured. The majority of adults who have lost at least one tooth lose them because of tooth decay or gum disease. If you have lost teeth, there are ways you can get your teeth back.

Tooth Replacements

What kind of restorative dentistry you choose to have depends on how many teeth you have lost and when you lost them. If you have lost one tooth, you may be able to replace it with a dental implant. Dental implants are titanium screws set into your jawbone. A prosthetic tooth covers them, and implants act just like your natural teeth. Implants can also replace several teeth or all of your teeth.

If you have lost a few teeth that are next to or across from each other, you may want to think about a bridge. Bridges consist of prosthetic teeth with metal that attaches inside your mouth or that are cemented in. Bridges can be used to replace most teeth in your mouth, even your front teeth.

If you have lost all of your teeth, you still have options. You can opt for implants or dentures. There are advantages and disadvantages to both, so you should discuss your options with a dentist. Dentures are less expensive, but many people find them to be uncomfortable, and they worry about the shape of their jaw changing. Implants retain your jaw shape well, and they act like natural teeth, but they are expensive. Be sure to ask a dentist which option may be right for you.
