Why Teeth Become Yellow As We Get Older

Posted on 3/15/2025 by Parkside Dental
An older woman with glasses smiling in a dentist chair, ready for her first dental visit.Have you noticed your smile isn't as bright as it used to be? As we age, it's natural for our teeth to become more yellow. But why does this happen?

There are two main reasons why teeth turn yellow:

1~ Enamel Wear and Tear: The outer layer of our teeth, called enamel, is naturally white. However, over time, the enamel can wear down revealing the yellowish dentin underneath. This dentin is a layer beneath the enamel that gives the tooth its natural color.
2~ Stains: Our daily habits, like drinking coffee, tea, and red wine, can stain the enamel. Additionally, smoking can leave behind yellow and brown stains.

While these are the two main reasons, other factors can contribute to yellowing teeth, such as:

•  Poor oral hygiene: Brushing and flossing regularly removes plaque and bacteria, which can stain teeth.
•  Genetics: Some people are naturally more prone to having yellow teeth due to their genes.
•  Certain medications: Some medications, such as antibiotics, can cause tooth discoloration.
•  Trauma to the teeth: Injuries to the teeth can damage the enamel and make them more susceptible to staining.

What can you do about yellow teeth?

Fortunately, there are several things you can do to prevent and reverse yellowing teeth:

•  Practice good oral hygiene: Brushing twice a day, flossing daily, and using mouthwash can help remove stains and prevent plaque buildup.
•  Visit your dentist regularly: Your dentist can perform a professional cleaning to remove deeper stains and check for any underlying dental issues that may be contributing to discoloration.
•  Use whitening toothpaste or mouthwash: These products can help remove surface stains and brighten your smile.
•  Consider professional teeth whitening: This is the most effective way to whiten your teeth. Your dentist can discuss different options and help you choose the best one for your needs.

Restoration Dentistry: Solutions for Damaged Teeth

In some cases, yellowing teeth may be due to damaged enamel or other dental issues. Restoration dentistry offers various solutions to repair and restore the appearance of your teeth. These include:

•  Dental fillings: Fillings can replace missing tooth structure and prevent further decay.
•  Crowns: Crowns cover the entire tooth and can be used to restore strength and improve the appearance of severely damaged teeth.
•  Veneers: Veneers are thin shells that are bonded to the front surface of the teeth to improve their color, shape, and size.

Conclusion

Yellowing teeth are a common concern as we age. By understanding the causes and taking steps to prevent and treat discoloration, you can maintain a bright, healthy smile for years to come. Remember, good oral hygiene, regular dental checkups, and professional whitening treatments can help you achieve a whiter, more confident smile.
